Electric pressure cookers have become a popular kitchen staple, but recent incidents across the country show they may be far more dangerous than advertised. Over the past several months, pressure cooker explosions and recalls have surged many involving well-known brands sold in big-box stores and online marketplaces.
At Bluestein Attorneys, we’re monitoring these developments closely to help protect South Carolina consumers from defective products that can cause catastrophic burn injuries.
Recent Pressure Cooker Incidents and Recalls
Several lawsuits filed in the last several months highlight a concerning pattern:
-
Farberware (sold at Walmart): A Louisiana woman suffered serious burns after the lid allegedly blew off, launching hot contents outward.
-
Sunbeam Crock-Pot: A Michigan plaintiff claims the lid opened while still under pressure, causing severe burns.
-
Ambiano (sold at Aldi): An October recall followed reports of hot contents being forcefully ejected while the unit was still pressurized.
-
Instant Pot (sold through Amazon): A Colorado lawsuit alleges the device allowed pressurized opening, resulting in catastrophic burns.
These follow earlier large-scale recalls involving Ninja Foodi, Insignia, Bella, Cooks, Crux, and other brands. Despite being marketed as “safe,” many models still fail to prevent lids from opening while pressurized or allow unsafe pressure buildup leading to violent, scalding explosions.
Why These Cases Are So Dangerous?
Pressure cooker explosions often result in severe injuries that can include second or third degree burns, permanent scarring or disfigurement, skin grafts and long hospital stays, emotional trauma, or lost wages and long-term care needs
These injuries are life changing and frequently require intensive medical treatment.
What to Do If Your Pressure Cooker Explodes
If a pressure cooker malfunctions:
-
Get medical care immediately.
-
Keep the cooker, lid, and all parts, do not throw anything away.
-
Take photos of the device and your injuries.
-
Save receipts, packaging, and any recall notices.
-
Contact a product liability attorney as soon as possible.
Properly preserving the device is critical for engineering experts to evaluate the defect.
